So last year Emmett and I set out on a “Year of Montessori Learning,” made up of 12 monthly themes that we used to pick out books, arrange his shelves, choose activities and even come up with a playlist to jam to during the day. It was really fun, encouraged us to try and learn new things and made toy and book rotation a breeze. However, the posts that I put together every month became quite the hefty task and I found myself getting later and later on posting them until we hit November and December, and I didn’t even bother posting at all. We were in the middle of a huge remodel and moving and the holidays, so I’m cutting myself some slack, but I still felt badly about not finishing out the year.
All that to say, we’re going to carry on with our monthly themes, but the monthly posts are going to be short and sweet. I’ll post our bookshelves and work shelves, and if there’s anything else that really sticks out I’ll share some of that too. But I’m keeping it simple!
Here are our monthly themes for 2018:
AUGUST: Language Arts
SEPTEMBER: Fine Arts
And without further ado…here are some of the books and shelf work we enjoyed for Transportation month!
We didn’t make it to the library this month, we’ve been focusing on getting settled in to our new house, but luckily transportation is a topic we have quite a few books on. Anyone who knows Emmett knows he loves anything with a motor!
Our Collection: Little Blue Truck Leads the Way. Cars (Golden Book). Trucks. Farm Vehicles. Roadwork. Whose Truck? Fred and Ted Like to Fly. Counting Cars. Little Excavator. Cars, Trains, Ships & Planes. Trucks. The Wheels on the Bus. Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. The Midnight Ride of Thomas the Tank Engine. I’m a Bulldozer. Building Site. Katy and the Big Snow. Thomas and the Big Big Bridge. The Little Engine that Could. Family Reunion. Little Blue Truck.
I’ve been tempted to take some of these simpler board books out of our library, but Emmett is in such a rich vocabulary development stage, he just loves knowing what everything is called and pointing out each machine. While I’d rather read storybooks after two years of board books, I’m so impressed with how much he knows and how much he still enjoys his board books. This month’s theme was quite popular, and we spent many, many hours curled up on the couch working our way through the whole collection.
On our Shelves: We didn’t get the work shelves up in the playroom set up until last week, so it’s mostly been this small shelf of transportation-related toys. And his tool set, because he and Dad have had A LOT to do around the house. Next month we’ll definitely focus on more age-appropriate work, but it was pretty interesting to see how he engaged with these vehicles on a daily basis. Most popular, as always, are the tractors. But he really loved the mini-machines he got for Christmas and has enjoyed the Duplo excavator and dump truck too.
Duplo Town Truck & Tracked Excavator. Melissa & Doug Stacking Construction Vehicles. CAT Mini Machines. Melissa & Doug Hammer and Saw Tool Bench. Bosch Toy Drill. Melissa & Doug Trailer and Excavator. Brio Freight Ship and Crane. Assorted John Deere ERTL tractors and accessories.
This theme has been perfect for a busy month as we’ve transitioned back into normal life, and I’ve loved exploring one of Emmett’s natural interests with him. I’m already planning and plotting for geography month, and good thing, because it starts tomorrow! I post about our days and activities even more regularly on Instagram, so follow along there if you want to see more of our monthly themes! See you next month!
